Plovdiv (Bulgarian: Пловдив; English: Plovdiv) is the second largest city in Bulgaria, the capital of Plovdiv, located 120 kilometers southeast of the capital Sofia. At the end of 2000, the population was 728,500. It is an important economic, cultural, and educational center, and one of the birthplaces of Bulgarian national revival, as well as one of the oldest cities in Europe with many monuments.
