City in the sky - Meteora

Meteora is located in the Thessaly region in north-central Greece, with a core protection area of 3.75km2. A remote area of sandstone peaks with almost no roads, monks have lived in seclusion in these "sky pillar" worlds since the 11th century. During the revival of the hermit ideal in the 15th century, monks built 24 monasteries here successively in the face of incredible difficulties and obstacles. The murals created in the 16th century are a sign of the main development stage of post-Byzantine painting art.
